The Formidable Orlando Magic
In 1989, the Orlando Magic basketball team joined the NBA as an expansion franchise. Named in a contest, they were the first professional sports team in the Orlando area.
As with most expansion franchises in any professional sport, the first few years were difficult for the Orlando Magic. However, they did show steady improvement, gaining most improved team status in their second and fourth years with the league. Their second year, they sold out every home game except one and in the third year all 41 home games were sell-outs.
Anyone who knows anything about the NBA has probably heard of Shaquille O’Neal or “Shaq”. In their fourth year as a professional basketball team, Shaq joined the Magic, helping them to win twenty more games than in the previous season. Shaq played for the Magic until the end of the 1996 season, when he left the team to go play for the Lakers. Other notable players include Tracy McGrady, Penny Hardaway, and Dwight Howard, among others.
In their short time with the league, the Orlando Magic has made it to the playoffs eleven times. They have four division titles and two conference titles to their credit as well.
Cheering the team on and exciting the fans at each home game is Stuff the Magic’s Dragon. This team mascot is a furry green dragon with a pink and blue mohawk and can be seen teasing fans and referees, doing tricks, and performing many other amazing acts of magic and practical jokes. He has also managed to teach the Orlando Magic Dancers how to slam dunk, creating the Dunkin Dancers team. Of course, the dancers are also seen performing their amazing routines and delighting fans of all ages with their skill and team spirit.
The team is as “magical” off the court as on. Out in the community, the players, coaches, and staff are active in fighting childhood obesity, promoting education, and helping families in need. They not only donate money, but also team memorabilia, and their time. From visiting children’s hospitals to hosting holiday parties for area families, the Orlando Magic franchise takes great pride in giving a hand to disadvantaged residents.
The Amway Arena, nicknamed the O-Rena, is the home of the Orlando Magic. They have seating for more than 17,000 fans, with 26 luxury suites. Because of the small size compared to other venues throughout Florida and the NBA, recent years have seen a loss for the arena and the teams that play there.
The city is in the process of building a new arena, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010 and is estimated to have more than 20,000 seats. The arena and all of its amenities will be state of the art and perfect for a night out for the whole family.
Orlando Magic games are exciting and intense. They win often and the entertainment on the sidelines can’t be beat. The new stadium opening can do nothing but improve an already fantastic experience.
